How Good is Broadband in Newport?

Newport has excellent broadband infrastructure across most of the city, with full fibre widely available and strong competition from multiple providers in many neighbourhoods. Coverage is particularly strong in the eastern and central areas, though some outer edges have more limited options.

St Julians and Beechwood have comprehensive full fibre coverage from multiple providers, including independent networks, giving residents excellent choice for competitive deals. Pillgwenlly and Somerton benefit from extensive FTTP availability, with Pillgwenlly also covered by Virgin Media's cable network.

Stow Park and the city centre enjoy strong coverage from both Openreach full fibre and alternative providers, plus Virgin Media cable in Stow Park. Rogerstone and Bassaleg on the western side have good full fibre access, with Rogerstone benefiting from Virgin Media's newer fibre technology. Rhiwderin and Crindau have patchier coverage, with fewer properties connected to full fibre networks and more limited provider choice.

Newport's broadband infrastructure is among the best in Wales, with nearly 89% full fibre coverage and 95% gigabit availability. The high gigabit figure reflects overlapping networks, as Virgin Media's extensive cable coverage complements Openreach's full fibre rollout across much of the city.

The significant alternative provider presence in eastern and central areas means genuine competition on price and service, though this varies by postcode. With less than 1% of homes on old copper connections, nearly every property in Newport can access modern, fast broadband.

How to choose the best broadband deal in Newport

The four things worth checking before you commit to a 24-month contract.

Best value broadband deal

Newport's strong provider competition, particularly in eastern neighbourhoods, creates opportunities for competitive pricing. Three offers basic broadband from £17/month for 10Mbps speeds, suitable for light internet use. With multiple networks competing across much of the city, it's worth comparing full fibre deals from both major providers and independent networks to find the best value for your needs.

Best deal for speed

Newport residents have access to some of the fastest broadband speeds available in the UK, with multiple gigabit-capable networks covering most of the city. YouFibre offers speeds up to 7000Mbps (7Gbps) for £99.99/month, the ultimate option for power users. Most households will find 150-500Mbps full fibre packages offer excellent performance at lower prices.
