Why choose Virgin Media?

Independent cable network

Unlike most UK providers, Virgin Media runs its own residential cable infrastructure rather than relying on Openreach. This gives them full control over their technology and speeds.

Higher starting speeds

The entry-level speed floor is 132Mbps, which is notably faster than the sub-80Mbps base tiers offered by BT, EE and Sky. This gives you plenty of bandwidth even on the cheapest plan.

O2 customer benefits

If you have an O2 mobile plan, you get boosted broadband speeds, double mobile data, and access to O2 Priority. No other broadband supplier offers this combination of cross-benefits.

Comprehensive TV bundles

You can bundle Sky channels, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and Netflix directly into your package. While Sky themselves offer this, Virgin Media is the only cable operator doing so at this scale.

Automatic compensation scheme

The company is part of the Ofcom Automatic Compensation Scheme, alongside BT, Sky and EE. You get free setup as standard and automatic bill credits if your connection drops out or an engineer misses an appointment.

Formed in March 2006 from the NTL and Telewest merger, Virgin Media operates completely differently from most UK broadband suppliers. Headquartered in Reading, it is now part of the Virgin Media O2 joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefónica, which was finalised in June 2021. Instead of using the standard Openreach lines, the company runs its own dedicated cable network built on hybrid coaxial and fibre-optic infrastructure. This gives them full control over their infrastructure, though the network’s reach is more focused on urban and regional areas than rural ones.

The main differentiator here is that standalone network. Because Virgin Media does not rely on Openreach or CityFibre, its entry-level speeds start at 132Mbps, while most rivals still offer 36Mbps to 75Mbps base tiers. Being tied to O2 also brings specific cross-benefits you cannot always get from other broadband suppliers. If you use O2 for your mobile, you get boosted broadband speeds, double mobile data, and access to O2 Priority rewards.

Coverage is entirely postcode-dependent. The Virgin Media's own network network is highly focused on urban and regional areas, meaning availability drops off sharply once you leave larger towns and cities. Do not assume you can get a connection just because a neighbour down the road has it. You need to run a postcode checker check before getting attached to a specific deal.

Virgin Media package types

M125 Broadband Only

This 132Mbps tier suits a couple or a small household streaming in 4K, working from home, and running a few smart devices.

M250 Broadband Only

At 264Mbps, this package handles a family of three or four with ease. It provides enough bandwidth for simultaneous streaming, video calls and online gaming on multiple devices without slowing down.

M500 Fibre broadband

This 516Mbps tier is built for a busy household of four or five people. It is the right choice if someone frequently downloads large game updates, several people stream 4K at once, or you regularly back up large files to the cloud.

Gig1 Fibre broadband

Offering 1.1Gbps, this is for heavy users running 4K streaming on multiple TVs and competitive online gaming. It is useful for frequent large file transfers or a home with ten or more connected devices active at the same time.

Virgin Media sits squarely in the mid-range for headline pricing, but it looks highly competitive when you break down the cost per megabit. The M250 Broadband Only package undercuts equivalent Openreach speeds on starting price, letting you get a 264Mbps connection for £18.99 a month. The gigabit tiers follow a similar pattern, often pricing out cheaper than standard full fibre rivals. You get free setup across the range, and while there are no gift cards to tempt you, the main loyalty incentives come through those O2 customer perks.

All current deals run on a 24-month term with two scheduled price rises during the contract. The exact dates and amounts are disclosed in pounds and pence when you sign up. The headline rate applies for the first part of your contract before the scheduled increases kick in.

Virgin Media pros and cons

Pros

  • Runs on its own cable network, so you are not sharing Openreach infrastructure with dozens of other providers
  • Even the entry level packages start well above 100Mbps, which is faster than the basic tier at most rivals
  • O2 customers get extra perks including boosted speeds, double mobile data and access to O2 Priority
  • TV bundles include Sky channels, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and Netflix if you want everything under one roof
  • Setup is free across the range and the provider is part of Ofcom's Automatic Compensation Scheme

Cons

  • Trustpilot scores are on the lower side, with customer service and billing the most common themes in negative reviews
  • Your monthly price steps up twice over the 24 months, so budget for the full contract cost rather than the starting rate
  • Cable coverage does not reach everywhere, so you will need to check your postcode before you get your hopes up

How Virgin Media compares

Virgin Media vs BT. Virgin Media offers top speeds of 1.1Gbps compared to BT’s 900Mbps. At the entry level, Virgin Media provides 264Mbps on its M250 Broadband Only plan for £18.99, whereas BT offers just 36Mbps on its Fibre Essential tier for a higher monthly cost. Both providers apply two scheduled price rises during the contract, with the exact dates and amounts disclosed at sign-up.

Virgin Media vs Sky. Sky hits higher maximum speeds up to 5Gbps using CityFibre and Openreach lines, while Virgin Media stops at 1.1Gbps. At the entry level, Virgin Media costs £18.99 for 264Mbps on the M250 Broadband Only plan, which undercuts Sky’s Full Fibre 75 package. Both use 24-month contracts, but Sky gives you a mid-contract exit right if you reject a price rise, which Virgin Media does not offer.

Virgin Media vs EE. EE reaches 1.6Gbps at the top end, but Virgin Media has a higher entry speed of 132Mbps compared to EE’s 36Mbps Fibre 36 plan. The Virgin Media M250 Broadband Only base tier is also cheaper, starting at £18.99 a month. Both use a 24-month term, but EE bundles extras like Apple TV and Norton security, whereas the main cross-sell here is O2 mobile perks. Both providers apply two scheduled price rises during the contract, with the exact dates and amounts disclosed at sign-up.
