Why choose TalkTalk?
Dual-network access via Openreach and CityFibre
TalkTalk taps into both Openreach and CityFibre rather than sticking to a single wholesale network. This means your available speeds and connection type vary depending on which infrastructure reaches your specific street.
Home Safe security filter included
You get network-level security filtering built into your connection at no extra cost. This blocks malicious sites and lets you restrict content across all devices connected to your home Wi-Fi.
Free setup across the entire range
You don’t pay any upfront activation or postage fees when joining. This is a helpful saving compared to providers that charge to send out the router or switch on the line.
Wi-Fi Hub router included
Every package includes the standard Wi-Fi Hub or the newer Wi-Fi Hub 3. While a free router is standard practice across the market, these units are fully capable of handling regular daily browsing and streaming.
TalkTalk started in 2003 as a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse before breaking off as a standalone business in March 2010. The company is headquartered in Salford and is currently owned by Toscafund Asset Management following a 1.1 billion pound takeover in 2021.
TalkTalk doesn’t own its core infrastructure. Instead, it acts as a reseller, using the Openreach network alongside CityFibre. The main draw here is the dual-network access. Because TalkTalk taps into both networks, the speed and value you get depend heavily on which network is live at your specific address. Alongside this flexibility, they include their Home Safe security filter as standard on all plans. You also get free setup across the entire range, saving you the upfront activation fees that many rivals still charge just to switch the line on.
Between the two networks, availability is widespread across the UK. Most homes can access the standard copper-based services, while the full fibre rollout covers a large footprint. Because the provider runs on both Openreach and CityFibre, a postcode checker is essential to see exactly what speeds reach your front door. If one network hasn’t reached your street yet, there is a strong chance the other one already has.
TalkTalk package types
Fibre 35
Delivering average speeds of 152Mbps, the Full Fibre 150 plan uses older FTTC technology. It suits one or two people doing standard web browsing, checking emails, streaming in standard definition, and light working from home. It will struggle if a large household tries to use the internet heavily at the same time.
Fibre 65
The Full Fibre 150 package bumps the average speed to 152Mbps. This FTTC connection works well for a couple or a small family needing to stream high-definition video on two devices while handling standard video calls for work.
Full Fibre 150 / Full Fibre 150 CityFibre
Using FTTP infrastructure, the Full Fibre 150 tier offers speeds around 152Mbps. This is a strong choice for a family of three or four where people are streaming in 4K, gaming online, and working from home simultaneously.
Full Fibre 500
The Full Fibre 150 option provides speeds of 152Mbps for busy homes. It handles households of four or five running multiple 4K streams, downloading large console games, and keeping several smart home devices connected at once without buffering.
Full Fibre 900/940
Reaching top speeds of 152Mbps, the Full Fibre 150 tier is built for large households with heavy data needs. It is the right fit if you have multiple heavy uploaders doing large file transfers, content creation, and running cloud backups alongside heavy streaming.
TalkTalk sits firmly in the budget to mid-range bracket. It ranks among the cheaper big-name providers without being the lowest priced option at every tier. The current Full Fibre 150 package at 152Mbps costs £24.00 a month on a 24-month term. While they currently advertise no price rises in 2026, the contract still includes a single rise scheduled for the following year. The headline price applies for the first year, with a single increase scheduled for year two, although having just one rise is fewer than the two baked into many Openreach competitors.
You won’t find short-term flexibility here. Every plan requires a 24-month commitment, with no rolling or 12-month options available. Setup is completely free across all packages and this provider also regularly includes gift cards to secure your custom.
TalkTalk pros and cons
Pros
- Only one mid-contract price rise built in, which is fewer than most rivals on the Openreach network
- Uses both Openreach and CityFibre, so you may get a better speed or price depending on which network is live at your address
- Sits among the cheapest of the big providers across the speed range, from entry level fibre up to gigabit
- Wi-Fi Hub router and Home Safe security come as standard, which adds a layer of online protection out of the box
- Setup is free across the range, so there is no extra cost to get connected
Cons
- Trustpilot scores are on the lower side, with customer service and connection issues the most common themes in negative reviews
- Mid-contract price rises are still baked in, so the headline price is not what you end up paying throughout
How TalkTalk compares
TalkTalk vs Plusnet. TalkTalk offers faster top speeds reaching 940Mbps, while Plusnet caps out slightly lower. Plusnet is generally cheaper at the entry level and advertises UK-based support, whereas TalkTalk uses offshore call centres. Structurally, TalkTalk includes one mid-contract price rise in its 24-month term, while Plusnet includes two.
TalkTalk vs NOW Broadband. TalkTalk provides gigabit options up to 940Mbps, whereas NOW lacks a gigabit tier entirely. Both lock you in for a 24-month term, but NOW is slightly cheaper on entry-level plans. NOW may increase your price during the contract but with a right to exit, while TalkTalk has a single price rise in its contract.
TalkTalk vs Vodafone. Vodafone offers a faster 1.8Gbps tier and a 4G backup dongle that TalkTalk doesn’t match. Both start around the same price on a 24-month agreement. The main structural difference is that Vodafone has two mid-contract price rises during the term, compared to a single rise from TalkTalk.
